DEFINITION OF TERMS

Definition of a Sophomore:

A “sophomore” for the purposes of a Goldwater nomination is defined as an undergraduate who has two more years (4 semesters) of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2020. A sophomore who is awarded a Goldwater Scholarship can expect to receive a maximum of two years (4 semesters) of support.

Definition of a Junior:

A “junior” is defined as an undergraduate who has one more year (2 semesters) of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2020. A junior who is awarded a Goldwater Scholarship can expect to receive a maximum of one year (2 semesters) of support.

Definition of Resident:

As used in the context of this nomination, “resident” is used to describe a student’s state or territory of legal residence. A student’s home state of residence can be 1) the state in which his/her parents or legal guardians are residents, 2) if this criterion of residence is not applicable, the state in which the student is eligible for in-state tuition, or 3) the state in which a student is registered to vote.

Definition of a Transfer Student:

For the purposes of a Goldwater nomination, a “transfer student” is defined to be a student who began his/her college career at a 2- or 4-year college or university other than the academic institution that is nominating the student for a Goldwater scholarship. An associate’s degree or a minimum amount of time in residence at another institution is not required. High school students who have taken college classes prior to graduating from high school are not considered to be transfer students.
