DEFINITION OF TERMS

Definition of a Sophomore:

A “sophomore” for the purposes of a Goldwater nomination is defined as an undergraduate who has two more years (4 semesters) of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2019. A sophomore who is awarded a Goldwater Scholarship can expect to receive a maximum of two years (4 semesters) of support.

Definition of a Junior:

A “junior” is defined as an undergraduate who has one more year (2 semesters) of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2019. A junior who is awarded a Goldwater Scholarship can expect to receive a maximum of one year (2 semesters) of support.

Definition of Resident:

As used in the context of this nomination, “resident” is used to describe a student’s state or territory of legal residence. State of legal residence is important as a student’s application is evaluated against applications from others in this state or territory. A student’s home state of residence can be 1) the state in which his/her parents or legal guardians are residents, 2) if this criterion of residence is not applicable, the state in which the student is eligible for in-state tuition, or 3) the state in which a student is registered to vote.
